the world
Since recorded history, humanity has been split in two kinds of people: those like you and me, who wake up everyday to get ready and go through our daily routines, and those who use superhuman abilities to get through theirs.

Who they are and what they can do is no secret. Wars have been waged against and for them. Technology has developed to contain and punish those who pose a threat. They are a minority, but the vast majority of world leaders are gifted in some manner or another, even if the struggle for equality is still alive and kicking. Some in more extreme ways than others.

the break
You've probably heard of Imogen Robinson. Considered the single most powerful psychic in the last three centuries, Imogen was, since the first manifestations of her powers at her eighth month of life, placed on an altar of awe and celebrity, raised to become a genius on the level of her historic predecessors within the prestigious Britain's International Academy of Psionic Arts. With a seemingly infinite amalgam of psychic powers, from telepathy to telekinesis to illusions and memory manipulation, Imogen was considered the next step in the evolution of the Gifted, and her world was violently torn in half between the people who expected greatness from her, and those who cast her aside out of fear and loathing - including her own parents.

Needless to say she was a problem child from the get-go. Used to having her way even when all those around her said no, she would often seclude herself inside her own little world, where all rules were bent to her whims. Once she alienated herself beyond measure and started to threaten those who disrupted her, the power inhibitors came in. The result only caused her to lash out more, until she created a massive attack on the entire country that would render all residents unconscious for five minutes.

This event was known as The Break all across the world, and from then on Imogen was considered a liability, not a beacon of hope. She ran from the school to never be traced down even by the most infallible locators and fellow psychics. This was over thirty years ago.

anabela moniz
Anabela is the daughter of Diniz and Fátima Moniz. Born into an extraordinarily wealthy and highly reputable family name in Portugal, she was the result of a marriage for convenience, not love, and it reflected on her upbringing: her mother seemed more interested in her political career than the girl's education, and her father seemed focused on making his own fame, rather than relying on her grandfather's legacy. At the age of two, Anabela's father started to travel around the world in an endless series of adventures; when she was five he simply disappeared in some exotic location and was never heard of again.

The tragedy was reported all over the news. It pushed both Anabela and Fátima into some sort of bizarre fame, and the latter's political career was pushed forward with it. Not long after that, Fátima was appointed the head of the International Foundation for Human Equality, which to this day is nothing more than an anti-gifted party. Fátima now goes around the world with claims that the gifted are much too privileged and that humans should have more control over what they do and the rights they are given.

Needless to say Anabela was brought up in an environment with a similar sentiment. It's easy for her to be the target of unwanted attention, what with her mother's fame, but she also shares the view that the gifted have too much power in the world, considering how much of a minority they really are. She's been relatively quiet about her views, however, now in her mid-twenties and working as a nurse in the UK, where she finished her education. Her phobia has reached such a level that, while she doesn't consider to have outright murdered them, Anabela has done things to compromise the lives of gifted patients.

Unbeknownst to her - to anyone - Anabela's mother is actually Imogen Robinson. After the Break, she assumed a new identity and used her powers to warp everyone around her, just up until she no longer needed to. Fátima goes around the world pretending to be anti-gifted so she can meet the humans at the top of the chain and quietly dispose of them as she goes. Unsurprisingly, the daughter of such a powerful gifted woman has the gift as well. Anabela is unaware of this, however, and has had her gift suppressed all her life by Fátima's own.

Her gift, were she able to use it, would be the ability to make virtually anything explode. If she were ever to get away from her mother's influence, this could very well have disastrous results.
